2023 Scholarship

About the Scholarship

The Lake Jackson Historical Association would like to support the pursuit of higher education ​in the Brazosport community. We will award two $500 scholarships to a graduating high school senior OR a current student at a 2-year or 4-year higher education institution in the Brazosport area who demonstates an interest in historical preservation and education. 

Application materials are due May 19, 2023 at 11:59 PM. A committee from the LJHA Board of Directors will select the award recipients. The winners of the scholarships will be notified by mid-June. 

Upon notification of their award, the scholarship winners will be expected to send official documentation of their planned enrollment in a community college or 4-year college/university for the 2023-2024 school year. Upon receipt of this documentation, scholarship funds will be presented to the award recipients

Eligibility

Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0

Must be graduating from high school in spring 2023 OR currently enrolled in a 2-year or 4-year college/university 

Must plan to attend a community college or 4-year college/university in the 2023-2024 school year

Must plan to major in a humanities or social science discipline

How to Apply

To apply, write an approximately 300-500 word essay on some aspect of Lake Jackson history and why it is important to study that history. We encourage you to explore our online collection to develop your own research ideas: https://www.ljhistory.org/explore-the-collection.

  • Karankawa history and culture 

  • The Jackson family and the Lake Jackson Plantation 

  • Slavery at Lake Jackson Plantation

  • Convict leasing at Lake Jackson Plantation

  • Dow Chemical Company's activities in Freeport and Lake Jackson 

  • Impact of Dow’s magnesium production on World War II 

  • Alden B. Dow and mid-century modern architecture 

  • Early Lake Jackson businesses & civic/social groups (examples: Lake Drug, LaVelle's Dress Shop, the Jaycees)

  • Institutional history of LJHA

 

You should also submit a copy of your most recent school transcript.
