During this four day camp, participants will learn about archaeology, the role it plays in history, and speak to professionals in the field! Campers will learn from a variety of hands-on activities and games.
This year's Junior Archaeology Camp will dive into the traveling exhibit A Time Before Texas which will be on display at the Lake Jackson Historical Museum from May 3 - June 28. The exhibit focuses on the Pleistocene period. In the last decade, archeologists have made a number of fascinating new discoveries about the way Paleoindians lived and even how they arrived in the land we now call Texas. These first peoples passed on knowledge and traditions through the generations, eventually giving rise to many culturally distinct Tribes and Indigenous American communities.
Some Indigenous Americans traditional stories say that their ancestors were always here. Archeologists, who study objects and evidence left behind from early cultures, believe people have lived here for at least 16,000 years. Both ways of understanding the past are important to the study of Paleoindian history. A Time Before Texas considers both current science and cultural tradition to explore what life was like for the first people to call early Texas home.
Camp is open to children ages 6 - 10 years of age. We will have two separate camp times depending on your child's age. This will allow us to modify activities so that children of all ages have the best experience!
Ages 6 - 7 will meet from 10 AM - 12 PM.
Ages 8 - 10 will meet from 2 PM - 4 PM.
